Bockmer, as it was known or Bockmer Old Manor House, sits peacefully amidst trees reflected in a fishpond, suggesting little of its colourful ownership and dramatic past. It is a site of archaeological and historical interest. The county Records state that the present house was probably built about 1595, certainly the east front dates from this time. After being partly destroyed and rebuilt in the 17th & 18th centuries with 19th and 20th century additions. It's believed that the wall garden represents part of the plan and forecourt of a previous house. Although the exterior of the house shows no great age, there is an unusual mounting block; Bockmer House still has its own supply of water, which was once a donkey-operated well. A Chapel was still standing in 1697, and sometimes in dry weather the foundations of former buildings are outlined. Planning permission was requested to construct a conservatory in 1996 and were obliged to have an archaeological survey of the site before the foundations were laid. This exposed pieces of pottery from the 12th to the 17th centuries as well as the outline of a series of buildings constructed prior to the late 16th century. The traditional Georgian market town of Marlow is only three miles away and is without doubt one of the loveliest locations on the river Thames, situated on a broad sweep of the river between Henley and Windsor. The town is made up of historic streets and an abundance of boutique shops, restaurants, cafes and bistros. There is a thriving social scene with a variety of events throughout the year. Marlow is perfectly located for several exceptional schools, both private and state funded, including Sir William Borlase in the town itself.
