Flora and fauna
Normandy’s valleys, hills, rivers, and forests attract an abundance of wildlife to this part of northwestern France. Natural parks and wildlife reserves provide a refuge for creatures large and small, while tended, mapped-out pathways allow us to witness them in their natural environment.
The flora and fauna are wonderful. Roadside verges and paths are full of wildflowers and with so many varied habitats there are abundant birds and animals to see. Hares, red squirrels, buzzards, bats, and butterflies are all common occurrences and if you are lucky you may spot a wild boar, black woodpecker or another rarities.
Approximately 8,200 hectares of the land is covered by the forest is varied planting of broad-leaved (mainly sessile oak and beech) and pine (mainly Scots pine) trees. It is well known for its varied wildlife, particularly deer and birds.
In winter the marshes around the property overflow with water from the ocean and it turns into a private island (with a small road connection to the mainland). In summer there's no view on the water but the large beaches are 15min away. There's also 80 hectares of private park.
Social ecosystem
The owners are very environmentally conscious - everything provided at the property is sourced from local suppliers and small businesses, they are very vigilant when it comes to recycling and reducing waste, doing their best to preserve the beautiful nature around. If you want to connect with the local community, you are in a good place. The hosts not only do so, but also keep to organise exchanges and events with them if guests are interested.
If you want to explore the surroundings and history of Normandy, Sainte-Mere-Eglise is the ideal starting point to discover the landing beaches and particularly Utah Beach in Sainte-Marie du Mont. This little village, located about 7km away from the accommodation was the first village in Western Europe to be liberated in WWII and still bears traces of the Battle of Normandy, and more specifically of the Normandy landings.
Utah Beach (19km away from the property) is the name of one of the 5 beaches in Normandy where Allied troops landed during summer 1944. This zone was handed over to American troops whose objective was to gain control over the beach and take back the town of Cherbourg. Most of our Normandy Tours include a visit to this beach.
