Flora and fauna
The ocean at the Ericeira coastline is home to a very rich biodiversity. It hosts around 1.000 marine species including sardines, tuna and Atlantic mackerel. The coastline consists of rocky cliffs and little bays with golden sand beaches. With these cliffs, and some small rivers ending in the ocean, a lively biodiversity can be found here that is definitely worth protecting.
The coast also offers good opportunities for bird watching. The area of Foz do Lizandro, located about 15 min drive south from the accommodation, is a place where gulls gather, and here you can get excellent views of the black-headed gull, cormorants, Grey Herons and stunning kingfishers.
Among the most common tree species you will find eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), the cork oak (Quercus suber), the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) and the stone pine (Pinus pinea).
Social ecosystem
There is quite a big digital nomad and surfing community in Ericeira to which you can connect. Ericeira itself is a beautiful town to discover by taking a pleasant walk, visiting local shops and discovering interesting crafts. It also had a long fishing tradition, which makes it a perfect place to eat marvellous fish and shellfish. Every morning fish and seafood are unloaded at the harbour, and many restaurants around the old town will serve Portuguese traditional cuisine, food delicacies using fresh local products
If you are into history, visit Mafra which is only 15 min drive away. It is famous for its Palace / Convent, the greatest construction of the Portuguese Baroque and the Tapada de Mafra that has a wide diversity of plant and animal species.
A lot of people and organizations needed to work together to get Ericeira recognized as a reserve. Joint efforts and collaborations from international and local surfers, business owners and the Portuguese government resulted in the making of Ericeira World Surfing Reserve.
The best surf season in Ericeira is from October to May, but surf schools remain packed throughout summer, the best season for newbies to learn due to warmer temps. Ericeira also hosts several surfing competitions throughout the year, and surf culture is felt throughout the whole community, from the locals who live there and surf daily, to the businesses in town that have spawned from the popularity of the sport.
