São Cristóvão is a traditional neighborhood in the Central Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. Located in the Centro and Historic Center region, its Lusitanian settlement began with the foundation of the Church of São Cristóvão in 1627, then on the seafront. At the time, fishermen tied their boats next to the church doors to attend masses, and it soon became a village of fishermen and traders. In 1803, a mansion was built on a hill, from which there was a good view of Guanabara Bay, which became known as "Paço de São Cristóvão", which was chosen by D. João VI to be the Royal Palace of the House de Bragança, seven years later; what was maintained even after Brazil's Independence; becoming the Imperial Palace; being surrounded by other manors where nobility families resided; which gave it the nickname Bairro Imperial. With the coup d'état that installed the republic, the elite moved to the young neighborhoods of Botafogo and Copacabana, and the Palace became the current headquarters of the National Constituent Assembly of 1891 and later of the National Museum, having been destroyed by fire in 2018. It borders the historic neighborhoods of Caju and Santo Cristo, the busy and recent neighborhoods of Benfica, Praça da Bandeira, Maracanã, Mangueira and the Vasco da Gama neighborhood.
