Christmas and New Year’s celebrations in Salinas, Ecuador, are spectacular. Since this is the sunniest and warmest time of the year in South America, the holidays are the premier dates during the high season. Christmas is a time for relaxing and spending time with family and friends, sun bathing on the beach, taking a dip in the pool, and enjoying a traditional meal. New Year’s Eve celebrations are rivaled only by Las Vegas! The festivities begin at sundown, when fireworks begin all along the beaches, as well as, around the entire city. They continue all night, reaching a crescendo at midnight, when dozens of huge bonfires are lit along the beach. Traditional monigotes (effigies) are thrown upon the bonfires to symbolically bid a resounding adios to all the worries and concerns of the old year, welcome the new year and all of the possibilities it holds. Automobile traffic along the malecon is blocked and throngs of people walk along the malecon celebrating. Everyone should experience the holidays in Salinas, Ecuador, at least once!
